Saudi Arabia and Qatar Lead Job Creation in the Gulf

Expatriates are more likely to secure a new job in Saudi Arabia than in any other country in the GCC, according to the latest employment data released today by GulfTalent.com, the leading Middle East online recruitment firm.

The number of expatriate employees in the Kingdom rose by an estimated 2.4% in the fourth quarter of 2009, followed by Qatar with a 2.2% increase. Oman also showed a marginal rise, with a 0.3% growth.

The results are based on actual staff increases and decreases reported by 11,000 managers across the region, who participated in a survey by GulfTalent.com.

Dubai Companies Look to Qatar

The head of Qatar’s financial watchdog said Monday the Gulf Arab state has seen a rise in interest from Dubai companies in the last six months as firms look to a safer regulatory environment in the wake of the emirate’s debt crisis.

Qatar to exhibit Nasrollah Afjei calligraphies

The world-renowned Iranian calligrapher, Nasrollah Afjei is scheduled to mount an exhibition of his works in the capital city of Doha, Qatar.

“I will exhibit 12 Qura’nic works, mostly in the Nasta’liq and Thuluth styles,” the 77-year-old artist told Fars News Agency.

Most of the works feature verses from Al-Fatihah, the first sura of the holy Qur’an, which consists of prayers for God’s guidance, stressing his lordship and mercy.

Afjei has held numerous exhibitions in Iran, France, the UK, Indonesia, Italy, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

He has also participated in Switzerland's International Calligraphy Exhibition of Ball and the Iranian Art Festival in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Turkish State Minister Kavaf held a series of talks in Qatar

Turkish State Minister Selma Aliye Kavaf held a series of talks in Qatar on Saturday.

Minister Kavaf, who is currently in Qatari capital Doha as the formal guest of Amir Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, met with the country’s Minister of Culture & Heritage Hamad bin Abd al-Aziz Al-Kawari.

During the meeting, Kavaf said that Istanbul, which got the 2010 European Capital of Culture title, and Doha, which was chosen the 2010 Arab Capital of Culture, would give messages of peace and dialogue to the world this year.

Land Rover sales jump 120pc in Qatar

Alfardan Premier Motors, exclusive importer of Land Rover in Qatar, has recorded a growth of 120 per cent in sales of Land Rover over the past 12 months.

“The year 2009 has been earmarked with scores of successes against the backdrop of a turbulent global economic scene which had particular impact on the international automotive industry,” said Mohammed Kandeel, general manager of Alfardan Premier Motors.

“This outstanding sales increase accentuates Alfardan Premier Motors’ solid fundamentals and future growth potentials,” he added.

Passenger Traffic at Muscat International Airport increased by 29%

The total passenger traffic (including transit & transfer passengers through Muscat International Airport has increased by 29% to 854,387 passengers during January and February 2010 compared to 660,578 passengers for the same period of 2009.

Statistics issued by the Directorate General of Safety and Aviation Services at the Ministry of Transport and Communications pointed out that the number of arrival and departure passengers through Muscat International Airport has increased by 8.97% to 858,390 at the end of February 2010 compared to 537,187 at the same period of the year 2009.

Oman to buy fighter jets from UK

The prime minister’s spokesman said the sale will help secure British jobs and “further enhance the strong strategic relationship between the UK and Oman”.

The aircraft are partly being built by BAE systems.

The company, which makes the aircraft with European partners, said: “Oman is a country with which we have a long and valued relationship and we stand ready and willing to support any requirement it has.”

Meanwhile, shadow defence minister Gerald Howarth said if a contract was signed, it would “demonstrate that the Typhoon is one of the leading swing role combat aircraft in the world”.

Oman, Antwerp sign port deal

Quoting various sources including IHS Global Insight, LR-Fairplay’s Daily News reports that Antwerp has reportedly signed a deal with Oman’s government to set up a company to manage the new port of Duqm in the Gulf country’s eastern Al Wusta region.

“The government and Belgian port of Antwerp will each have 50 per cent shareholding in the new company, called Port of Al Duqm,” Oman’s finance ministry said.

The accord was signed by the Oman’s transport minister Khamis bin Mubarak Al Alawi and Marc Van Peel, chairman of the Consortium Antwerp Port, Reuters reported.

“Duqm is a landmark project pushed by Oman that will complement the main industrial ports in Salalah and Sohar,” IHS Global Insight pointed out.

Qatar fund ready to invest in French shipping group

The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), which manages investments for the gas-rich nation, has offered the equivalent of 740 million euros in the form of loan guarantees, French business magazine La Lettre de l’Expansion reported.

“CMA is in discussion with the Qatar fund,” a source close to the matter told AFP, without providing more details. An agreement could be reached by the northern hemisphere summer.

Contacted by AFP, CMA CGM refused to comment.
