Alvaro Quiros had seven birdies and four bogeys Sunday for a 3-under 69, enough to win the Qatar Masters by three strokes over Louis Oosthuizen and Henrik Stenson.

Quiros, a 26-year-old Spaniard, finished with a total score of 19-under 269 at the Doha Golf Course.

“Winning is not easy,” Quiros said. “It is easy for guys like Sergio Garcia and others who win so often. So, definitely it is a big surprise for me to win here.”

Oosthuizen (71) had three birdies and two bogeys, and Stenson (68) had an eagle on No. 10, three birdies and a bogey. Damien McGrane (67) was fourth, three strokes behind second place.

Alvaro Quiros was in scintillating form today as he carded a third round eight-under-par 64 to secure a one shot lead at the Qatar Open.

The 26-year-old made a brilliant start to his round today with five birdies in the first nine holes. He added further birdies at holes 13,16 and 17 to finish on 16-under-par. Quiros now holds a one shot lead over South African Louis Oosthuizen.

Oosthuzien started round three at the top of the leaderboard with a four-stroke lead and started the round well with a birdie on the first hole, but his lead was cut on the fifth hole when he could only manage a double bogey. Oosthuzien, however, recovered to card a solid round of 69.

Oosthuizen, 26, did not drop a shot in a seven-under-par round of 65 to top the leaderboard on 12 under, after dislodging former champion Andrew Coltart. The Scot’s solid 69 left him a shot clear of Spain’s Alvaro Quiros and Australia’s Brett Rumford.

Oosthuizen, who has won five times on his native Sunshine Tour, narrowly missed out on a maiden European Tour title last week in Abu Dhabi. He finished runner-up there, after beginning his year with a 10th-place finish at the Joburg Open.

Oosthuizen, who is ranked 82nd in the world, said: “I had a very big temper about two or three years back because I was frustrated that I was not playing better, but now I handle myself much better and I’m definitely having more fun.”

Coltart was content with his “scrappy” second round, after an opening 66. “I’m pleased,” he said. “There is always a question whether you can follow up a low round and I think I managed it.
