Alvaro Quiros had seven birdies and four bogeys Sunday for a 3-under 69, enough to win the Qatar Masters by three strokes over Louis Oosthuizen and Henrik Stenson.

Quiros, a 26-year-old Spaniard, finished with a total score of 19-under 269 at the Doha Golf Course.

“Winning is not easy,” Quiros said. “It is easy for guys like Sergio Garcia and others who win so often. So, definitely it is a big surprise for me to win here.”

Oosthuizen (71) had three birdies and two bogeys, and Stenson (68) had an eagle on No. 10, three birdies and a bogey. Damien McGrane (67) was fourth, three strokes behind second place.

Louis Oosthuizen sets pace in Qatar Masters

Oosthuizen, 26, did not drop a shot in a seven-under-par round of 65 to top the leaderboard on 12 under, after dislodging former champion Andrew Coltart. The Scot’s solid 69 left him a shot clear of Spain’s Alvaro Quiros and Australia’s Brett Rumford.

Oosthuizen, who has won five times on his native Sunshine Tour, narrowly missed out on a maiden European Tour title last week in Abu Dhabi. He finished runner-up there, after beginning his year with a 10th-place finish at the Joburg Open.

Oosthuizen, who is ranked 82nd in the world, said: “I had a very big temper about two or three years back because I was frustrated that I was not playing better, but now I handle myself much better and I’m definitely having more fun.”

Coltart was content with his “scrappy” second round, after an opening 66. “I’m pleased,” he said. “There is always a question whether you can follow up a low round and I think I managed it.

Louis Oosthuizen shot a 7-under-par 65 on Friday to lead the Qatar Masters after two rounds. The South African is at 12-under 132, a new 36-hole record for the tournament in Doha, Qatar, breaking the previous mark held by six players. So far, Oosthuizen has carded 13 birdies and only one bogey.

Overnight co-leader and 1998 champion Andrew Coltart shot a 3-under 69 and is alone in second at 9-under. In third at 8-under are Alvaro Quiros (67) and Brett Rumford (69). Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, who held a share of the first-round lead, shot a 1-under 71 and is in fifth at 7-under 137.

Adam Scott defends Qatar title

Published: January 21st, 2009

Adam Scott goes into Thursday’s Qatar Masters bidding for his third win in three appearances at the European Tour event and staving off questions about his personal life.
The Australian shared second at last week’s Sony Open in Hawaii where he was photographed on a beach with Hollywood actress Kate Hudson.

It was Scott’s best performance since winning the Byron Nelson Championship last April and he admitted that he had been given a further reason to perform better.

“Something got me inspired to just work a little bit harder again,” he told the Press Association.

Qatar Masters

Published: January 20th, 2009

Another high-quality field has assembled in Qatar, as the European Tour remains in the Middle East for the second of three consecutive lucrative events.

This week’s Qatar Masters has a total prize fund of $2.5 million, of which the winner will collect in excess of $400k.

The 12-year-old Doha course has hosted every Qatar Masters since the tournament began in 1998 and it usually provides a stiff test for the players.

Although the course is not particularly long, it is certainly no push over thanks to the strong prevailing wind that blows here much of the time.

So who’s made the journey this week?
