Tsonga withdraws from Qatar Open with wrist injury

rld number 10 Jo-Wilfred Tsonga has been forced to pull out of the Qatar Open because of a wrist injury, hampering the Frenchman’s Australian Open preparations.

The 2008 Australian Open runner-up also withdrew from a six-man invitational event in Abu Dhabi earlier this week after injuring himself in training.

Tsonga pulls out of Qatar ExxonMobil Open

World number 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of has pulled out of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, the season’s first tournament, due to a wrist injury. This was confirmed by the Qatar Tennis Federation (QTF) yesterday.

‘I am extremely disappointed not to be able to participate in Qatar ExxonMobil Open due to a wrist injury. I hope that I will come to participate in years to come but in the meantime, I wish everyone there a good event and best wishes for 2010,’Tsonga was quoted as saying in a QTF statement.

The season’s first tournament takes place at the Khalifa Tennis Complex from January 4 to 9. World number one Roger Federer and world number two Rafael Nadal are the top two players taking part in the $1.3m tournament. Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko is also part of the 32-man field in Doha.

Armed Forces to sponsor Qatar Open golf event

The 24th Qatar Open amateur golf event, to be held in the second week of January, will be sponsored by the Qatar Armed Forces. This was announced by Qatar Golf Association (QGA) President Hassan Al Nuaimi in the presence of Brigadier Dahlan Al Hamad at the Doha Golf Club.

Spaniard Quiros leads at Qatar Open

Alvaro Quiros was in scintillating form today as he carded a third round eight-under-par 64 to secure a one shot lead at the Qatar Open.

The 26-year-old made a brilliant start to his round today with five birdies in the first nine holes. He added further birdies at holes 13,16 and 17 to finish on 16-under-par. Quiros now holds a one shot lead over South African Louis Oosthuizen.

Oosthuzien started round three at the top of the leaderboard with a four-stroke lead and started the round well with a birdie on the first hole, but his lead was cut on the fifth hole when he could only manage a double bogey. Oosthuzien, however, recovered to card a solid round of 69.
