Qatar largest investor in Sudan farms

Qatar is one of the leading investors in the agricultural sector in Sudan, says a former minister of irrigation of Egypt.

Mahmoud Abu Zaid is currently chairman of Arab Water Council. The Arab world is rich in water resources and agriculture. It’s lands are fertile. This is especially true of Sudan which is indeed the food basket of the Arab world.

Such resources are in need of capital-intensive investment as well as management. So the government and the private sector have already begun setting up food growing and processing projects in Sudan.

The investors in Sudan, which are commercial entities and not individuals, are all from Arab countries. Qatar has the largest investment in Sudan’s agricultural sector besides having investment in other areas of economy.

Darfur peace talks begin in Qatar

The Sudanese government and a key rebel faction Tuesday began their peace talks in Doha, capital of Qatar, in a bid to end a five-year civil war.

In his speech to open the talks, Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Hamadbin Jasim bin Jabir al-Thani said the Qatari-brokered talks on peace in Darfur is about to make a significant breakthrough towards a comprehensive settlement of the conflict.

It is the first peace contact since 2007 between the Sudanese government and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), he was quoted by Qatar’s official news agency as saying.

The first round of peace talks is the fruit of concerted efforts made by Qatar, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), the United Nations and the African Union, he added.

Sudan downplays tensions with Egypt over Qatar summit

(KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese government dismissed an talk of strained relations with Egypt as a result of president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir attending the emergency Doha meeting on the Gaza conflict held last week.

“There is no negative impact from our participation in the Qatar summit” spokesperson of Sudan foreign ministry Ali Al-Sadiq told reporters.

“Relations between Cairo and Khartoum are deeper than brief disagreements. Things should not be calculated in terms of winning or losing” he said.

The Qatari summit held to discuss the Israeli assault on Gaza strip was boycotted Arab heavyweight by Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Palestinian Authority headed by Mahmoud Abbas.

Yesterday the editor in Chief of Al-Ahram Osama Saraya who is considered close to Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak described the summit as a “comic play”.
