Chevron Corp. announced plans to spend $20 million over five years to establish a sustainable energy research center in Qatar.

San Ramon-based Chevron will invest in a partnership for the center with the Qatar Science & Technology Park in the city of Doha, Qatar’s largest city.

The Center for Sustainable Energy Efficiency will work to develop lighting and cooling technologies that work effectively in the Middle East’s climate.

It will also research renewable power, such as solar, and train Qatari engineers, scientists and students. The center is expected to open late this year.

Chevron’s technology companies including Chevron Energy Solutions will provide expertise for the center.
