Qatar’s first aqua park in Doha is set to open to the public in April 2010.

Featuring a giant wave pool, lazy river and various slides and water shoots, the park on the Salwa Road, will help boost tourism to the country, officials told Gulf News.

The first 100,000m sq phase is set to open next year, with a 300,000m sq resort currently under construction due to be completed in June 2011.

Ijaz Malik, Hala Group Enterprises general manager, told the paper the wave pool will create waves as high as 1.5m.

The park will also have a lagoon pool with fountains, light effects, rock-art works and shaded Jacuzzis, and a lazy river running through the centre.

A dry section of the park is planned with paintballing, BMX biking and roller skating.

“We are negotiating with an international company to bring the much-popular go-carts to provide an added entertainment,” Malik told the paper. “More rides and features will be included in later phases.”

The park’s construction began in July by Cypriot company, Aqua Masters Qatar.

“The project is being developed in line with the Qatari government’s policy to boost tourism in the country,” Abdullah Hassan al-Ghanem, Hala Group Enterprises’ CEO, told the paper.
